Professor John Browne

Director of the National Health Services Research Institute, Ireland

Professor John Browne is the Director of the National Health Services Research Institute in Ireland. He is a health services researcher with a professional background in health outcome measurement.

After completing his doctorate at Trinity College Dublin John worked at the Health Services Research Unit of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) from 1998 to 2008, where he oversaw the development of the NHS Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) programme and the acute care clinical guidelines programme for the National Institute for Clinical Excellence . He continues to hold an Honorary Professorship at LSHTM.

He is currently exploring the value of PROMs as a tool for engineering quality improvement in a variety of clinical areas including breast cancer surgery and joint replacement. He is also the Principal Investigator on the Health Research Board funded SIREN programme (Study of the Implementation of Reconfiguration on Urgent and Emergency Care Networks).
