Professor Niels Peek

Professor of Data Science and Healthcare Improvement

Niels Peek is Professor of Data Science and Healthcare Improvement and will provide strategic leadership for data science applied to improving quality and safety in healthcare.

With an extensive background in computer science and artificial intelligence, Niels has a global reputation for his work on data-driven informatics for healthcare improvement, health data science, clinical prediction models, and computerised decision support tools. Niels joins THIS Institute from the University of Manchester, where he was Professor of Health Informatics in the Division of Informatics, Imaging and Data Science. He was also Director of the Christabel Pankhurst Institute for Health Technology Research and Innovation, a partnership of academic, healthcare, industry and public sector organisations that aims to accelerate the translation of new technologies into healthcare practice. Niels co-led the International Centre for Translational Digital Health, a collaboration between the Universities of Manchester, Toronto and Melbourne and was previously the President of the Society for Artificial Intelligence in Medicine.

Research Interests

Niels will lead a bold and high-quality research programme to develop and evaluate possible solutions and interventions to support improvement in healthcare where there are increasing opportunities emerging from data and digital technologies.
