About the talk
Sepsis is a leading cause of hospital mortality and long-term morbidity among survivors. This talk will discuss research, guidelines, and large-scale quality improvements to advance sepsis care and outcomes, including a Michigan statewide quality improvement initiative involving 69 hospitals. One nagging concern of sepsis quality improvement initiatives is that they may drive up antimicrobial use across the board, including to patients who turn out to have non-infectious or non-bacterial causes for sepsis. This talk will cover research examining the impact of sepsis care on antimicrobial stewardship. Using a 152-hospital cohort with 1.5 million hospitalizations for potential infection over a 6 year period, we show that shortening time-to-antibiotics for sepsis was not associated with increases in antimicrobial use among the broader population of patients at-risk for sepsis. These findings show that efforts to hasten sepsis care have not let to indiscriminate antibiotic use. Nonetheless, around one-third of patients initiated on antimicrobial therapy for sepsis turn out to have non-bacterial causes of illness, and there is an urgent need for point-of-care diagnostics to inform antimicrobial prescribing to patients with potential sepsis.

About Hallie Prescott
Hallie Prescott is an Associate Professor in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Michigan and a staff physician the Ann Arbor Veterans Affairs Healthcare System. She attends in both the medical intensive care unit and outpatient pulmonary clinic.
Hallie is an expert in long-term outcomes and recovery after sepsis, with Master’s training in health services research. Her research programme focuses on sepsis care delivery and is funded by the US Department of Veterans Affairs and the US Agency for Healthcare Research & Quality. She leads a 69-hospital Michigan state-wide sepsis collaborative quality initiative funded by Blue Cross / Blue Shield of Michigan and serves as co-chair of the Surviving Sepsis Campaign Adult Guidelines panel.
