Showcasing fellows’ research at THIS Space 2024

THIS Institute’s fellowship programme comprises of 59 talented researchers leading high-quality studies to advance the field of healthcare improvement studies. Five fellows gave vibrant talks at THIS Space, THIS Institute’s annual conference, which brings together a dedicated community to learn about and discuss the latest research and evidence to improve the quality and safety of healthcare.

In our biggest conference yet with people joining from across the world, five fellows with varying disciplines and specialities showcased their research insights and outputs from their projects.

Matt Gittus provided an overview of how to use mixed methods approaches when examining variation in prescribing practices. Matt’s presentation draws on his fascinating PhD project which explores variation in adhering to clinical practice guidelines in rare diseases, specifically using Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease as a model to improve the quality and safety of the care provided.

Discussing the implementation of perioperative services and what it means for professional boundaries and new ways of working,
Justin Waring presents insights from his completed post-doctoral project which investigated the interlocking activities of spread, adaption and adoption of the Perioperative care for Older People undergoing Surgery (POPS) model in NHS Organisations.

Helen West’s PhD project focuses on quality improvement in the challenging context of specialist eating disorder units. Her talk explores the impact of reducing NGT (nasogastric tube) feeding under restraint and co-designing meal support in a specialist eating disorder unit by learning from good practice and co-designing improvement strategies.

Having recently completed her PhD, Lal Russell’s presentation asked, ‘What are the challenges of national clinical audit in the community?’ Lal examines the National Clinical Audit Programme as an example for improvement research, shining a light on perhaps the less-examined area of community stroke rehabilitation – the focus of her project.

Jonathan Gilham’s applies his background as a medical doctor in critical care and acute medicine as well as his experience as a software engineer with an interest in real-time systems. Jonathan’s presentation drew on his current PhD project which focuses on vital and standard processes of care like ordering blood tests and uses big data to contribute to improvement science.
