How virtual wards for people with frailty work and the role of remote monitoring

It is estimated that England will need between 23,000 and 39,000 additional hospital beds by 2030/31 – but there is only so much space available in our hospitals. To relieve some of the pressure, an increasing number of people are now receiving hospital care in their own homes. Significant efforts have been made to expand the capacity of virtual wards (also known as Hospital at Home services), with an emphasis on the role of remote monitoring as part of patient care.

We conducted a study to understand how Hospital at Home services work in real-world settings. Our research highlighted key shared goals, challenges and differences across these services, and identified several challenges related to implementing remote monitoring within them.

Find out how Hospital at Home services function for people living with frailty.
