Dr Matthew Woodward

Research Associate

Matthew is a Research Associate studying the interaction between technology, data and decision-making in healthcare

Matthew has a PhD on the topic of decision-making and forecasting for patient flow management (University of Bath). This identified the cognitive strategies used by clinical coordinators and managers and examined the role of tacit knowledge alongside operations data. He also holds an MSc in Ergonomics and Human Factors (University of Loughborough). Prior to joining academia, he worked for over a decade in an engineering company on the research and development of user interfaces for naval navigation and command systems.

Matthew is currently researching the impact of ambient voice technology (AVT) in primary care settings with a before-after evaluation study. This is evaluating both the impact of the technology on GPs use of time and the qualitative experiences of clinicians and patients. He has previously conducted research into the effectiveness and safety of several hospital improvement interventions including an inter-hospital electronic referral system for neurosurgery, patient identification technology in radiography, and changes to ward-theatre workflow. Recently he has studied the design and ergonomics of postpartum haemorrhage kits in maternity units. He is a chartered member of the Institute for Ergonomics and Human Factors.

Research Interests

Matthew’s research interests are in the interaction between people, technology and data in healthcare settings. He has a particular interest in the application of cognitive decision-making theory combined with the analysis of routinely collected data to improve hospital workflow.
