Shape research looking at the use of AI to record conversations between GPs and patients

We’re looking for people with recent experience of visiting a GP in-person to join a new advisory group (known as an expert collaborative group). The group will support a study examining the impact of using an AI-based tool called ‘digital scribes’ on GP’s time.
Doctor consulting with a patient in a medical practice

Digital scribes record and transcribe conversations between clinicians and patients and then generate documentation following the consultation. The aim to reduce the time clinicians spend on documentation – such as writing up notes. It is likely that AI-based tools will be widely used in the future, so it’s important to evaluate their impact now.

The group will play a vital role in ensuring that the perspectives of those use and deliver healthcare are at the heart of our work. Bringing together people with a wide range of perspectives, knowledge, skills, and experience, it will include public and patient representatives, healthcare staff, policymakers, and academics. Public members bring the perspective of patients, carers, and anyone with an interest in a research topic.

What is involved?

The group will meet roughly once every three months. Meetings will take place online. We will provide regular updates on the study and seek your views on various aspects of the research. You will help us test our thinking and refine our approach. For example, you might advise on recruiting participants and communicating the study results.

Why should you get involved?

This is a great opportunity to:

  • influence how the research is conducted and communicated, and how it impacts communities across the UK
  • develop your knowledge and experience of healthcare improvement research
  • develop your collaborative skills by working alongside people from a wide range of backgrounds

Advisory group members will be offered £25 per a meeting to cover preparation time, attendance, and post meeting feedback. You do not have to accept payment if you do not wish to.

Who should apply?

You don’t need to have worked in research to help shape research. We are looking public members from all backgrounds and communities who can use their experiences to shape and improve our research.

We are looking for people who:

  • regularly visit their GP or represent groups of people who are frequent users of general practice services
  • can consider the perspectives and needs of people from different backgrounds
  • can confidently and constructively take part in discussions and share their thoughts with a group of people
  • can attend up to six online meetings (usually lasting one hour) between March 2025 and June 2026

How to get involved
