Developing a perioperative core process and structure indicator set – Consensus workshop
Participant Information
1. Key things to know
We are conducting a project to develop a set of indicators of good care before, during and after surgery. If you agree to take part, you will be asked to participate in an online workshop where you will help us to agree on a final set of indicators of what good and safe surgery care looks like. The workshop will last three hours and will take place via Zoom on 19 March 2025 from 1pm to 4pm.
2. About this project
Perioperative care (care before, during and after surgery) starts when a patient is first considered for surgery and continues all the way through to the patient’s recovery. A lot of different indicators can be used to monitor quality of perioperative care, but not all are well-supported by evidence, and input from healthcare staff, patients and carers on what should be the most important indicators is lacking.
THIS Institute is running a study to develop a standard set of indicators for assessing perioperative care. To do this, we are seeking the views of healthcare professionals, managers, patients, carers and anyone involved in perioperative care about the most important indicators of good and safe care before, during and after surgery. This set of indicators will be useful for everyday monitoring, evaluation, and research.
Who is invited to take part?
You have been invited to take part because you are a healthcare professional, manager, patient or carer with an interest in perioperative care. Your experiences and views will be very helpful to understand the most important indicators of good and safe surgery care.
Do I have to take part?
Taking part is completely voluntary. We hope you will take part as this will provide helpful insights into the most important indicators of good care before, during and after surgery.
If you change your mind about taking part, you can withdraw at any time without giving a reason. However, it may not be possible to remove data that you have already submitted to the project. To withdraw from the project please email theprecisestudy@thisinstitute.cam.ac.uk.
Who is running this project?
This project is organised by an independent and highly experienced team from the University of Cambridge, led by Dr Kristina Wanyonyi-Kay from THIS Institute, University of Cambridge, in collaboration with colleagues from University College London.
This project is funded by The Healthcare Improvement Studies Institute (THIS Institute), University of Cambridge. THIS Institute is supported by the Health Foundation, an independent charity committed to bringing about better health and healthcare for people in the UK. You can find out more about THIS Institute here: https://www.thisinstitute.cam.ac.uk.
3. What will happen and how will I be involved?
You are invited to take part in a three hour online consensus-building workshop via Zoom. The workshop will explore your views of the most important indicators of good and safe care before, during and after surgery.
During the workshop, we will show you a proposed set of indicators of good and safe surgery care. We will ask you to consider which of these indicators should be kept, removed or changed. Through group discussions, you will decide which indicators should become part of the final standard set of indicators related to process and structures for quality and safety in perioperative care.
4. What will happen to the results of the project?
- Findings from this workshop will be used to develop a core set of indicators of good care before, during and after surgery.
- The results of the project will be submitted for publication in scientific journals, presentations, and other outputs. The findings may be shared with other researchers, including colleagues from The Heath Foundation, in a format which will not retain any personal details.
- Researchers will make sure they write the reports in a way that no-one can work out who you are. Nobody will be able to identify you from any feedback or findings that are published. Any quotations used in reporting will be anonymised.
- In this anonymous format, your data may contribute to other research proposals or studies on related topics.
- We will contact you about the project’s publications to offer the opportunity to be part of a contributorship group for academic outputs if you would like that. A contributorship group in research publications lists each person who helped with the research and is publicly available.
5. How will my personal information be looked after?
All data will be kept in secure online storage at the University of Cambridge.
