Our talented fellows
Over the last decade, our talented fellows have led high-quality studies that are advancing the field of healthcare improvement research. This unique fellowship programme helped grow capacity and capability in healthcare improvement research across the UK.
Building on the improvement science programmes previously run by the Health Foundation, the programme gave fellows the opportunity to join a supportive community of improvement researchers and strengthen their research leadership skills. Fellowships were held at universities across the UK and spanned a wide range of disciplines and specialities.
Our programme’s impact
Fellows raised additional extra funding through grants and studentships. High-value grants came from large infrastructure programmes, including NIHR, UKRI and EU Horizon funding.
When combined, our fellows’ research outputs have received 11,400 citations and counting, furthering their studies’ impact.
Our fellows and their projects were recognised in many ways including medals, research prizes for posters and abstracts, prestigious appointments keynote speaker invitations, advisory and editorial opportunities plus invitations to join research groups.
Contributing to national and international journals, fellows’ research outputs have made a significant addition to the growing evidence base for improving quality and safety in healthcare.
Fellows were part of creating 216 networks on a national (175) and international (41) scale, spanning 102 academic collaborations, 53 public sector organisations, 29 charity and non-profit organisations, 9 UK hospitals, 5 private sector organisations, and 2 learned societies.
Many fellows remained active in research after completing their projects and have secured other lecturing positions including a professorship, fellowships and post-doctoral opportunities, plus new clinical roles.
